Retainers and keeping teeth straight

My retainer feels tight after not wearing it — what should I do?

Tightness when putting a retainer back in after a period of non-wear usually means the teeth have moved. Do not force the retainer in. Contact your provider for advice before attempting to wear it, as forcing a tight retainer can damage the teeth or the appliance. Teeth can begin to move within days, and a retainer that was comfortable can feel tight after as little as a week of non-wear. Your clinician may advise wearing it full time for a short period to settle things, or may suggest a new retainer or a short course of aligners if the teeth have moved significantly.
