Finding an orthodontist near you
Browse by county or alphabetically by town name, then open the page for your nearest location to see what treatment is available there. Each location page sets out the appliance options commonly offered in that area — metal and ceramic fixed braces, clear aligners, lingual braces, and retainers — along with indicative UK pricing and links to nearby towns if your closest practice is a short drive away. You can also check the General Dental Council register at gdc-uk.org to confirm that any clinician you are considering is registered, and look for a specialist orthodontist rather than a general dentist if your case involves bite correction.
Start with registration: everyone practising dentistry in the UK must appear on the General Dental Council register at gdc-uk.org, and specialist orthodontists appear on a separate specialist list. Beyond that, look for a practice offering more than one appliance type, so the recommendation is driven by your case rather than by what they happen to fit. Ask for a written quote stating the total fee, what happens if treatment runs longer than planned, and whether retainers and post-treatment reviews are included — retainers are the most common hidden cost. A remote photo assessment first gives you a clinician's view before you commit to a paid consultation.
NHS orthodontic treatment is free for under-18s who meet a clinical threshold and is not realistically available to adults; private treatment is open to anyone and paid for out of pocket. The NHS threshold is set by the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need, requiring a Dental Health Component score of 4 or 5, or a score of 3 alongside an Aesthetic Component of 6 or above. NHS cases are treated with fixed metal braces. Private treatment adds ceramic brackets, clear aligners, and lingual braces behind the teeth, together with shorter waits and more flexible appointment times — at a cost that varies with case complexity and location.
Two routes are available on this hub: county chips that group every listed town within a county, and an A–Z letter index for when you already know the town name. Selecting a location opens a page covering the treatment options relevant to that area, a local clear aligner guide, a list of nearby locations in case your closest practice is inconvenient, and a link into the guided photo assessment. Nothing on the location pages requires an account or a booking. The intention is that you can research an area, understand roughly what treatment would involve and cost, and only then decide whether to start an assessment.
Yes — a guided photo assessment can be completed at home before you contact any practice. You take five prompted photos on a phone: a front bite view, both side views, and close-ups of the upper and lower arches. A GDC-registered UK clinician reviews them and comes back with the treatment options that look appropriate for your case, plus indicative pricing. It does not replace a clinical examination, and any practice you go on to see will take its own records, scans, and X-rays before treatment starts. What it does give you is a clinician's opinion before you spend money on consultation fees.
Private orthodontic treatment in the UK typically costs between £1,500 and £5,500, with clear aligners generally falling between £1,500 and £5,500. The spread is driven mainly by how much tooth movement is needed: a short case straightening mild front-tooth crowding sits at the bottom of the range, while full upper and lower fixed braces correcting a bite over 18 to 24 months sits near the top. Location matters too, with central London consistently higher than the rest of the country. NHS treatment is free for eligible under-18s. Always ask whether retainers and post-treatment reviews are included in a quoted figure, because they are frequently priced separately.
Adults are essentially never eligible for NHS braces in the UK. NHS orthodontic funding is directed at patients under 18 who meet the IOTN threshold, and routine adult treatment for crowding, spacing, or cosmetic alignment is not commissioned anywhere in the country. The rare exceptions run through hospital orthodontic departments rather than high-street practices, and involve cases such as jaw surgery, cleft lip and palate, or hypodontia, where braces form one part of a wider plan. If you are over 18, private treatment is realistically the only route — use the location pages here to see what is available near you and request an online quote.
Use the county browser on this page: select your county and it lists every orthodontic location held on Virtual Consultant Online within that county. Each county hub then links through to the individual town and city pages, which cover the appliance options relevant to that area, indicative UK pricing, and a link into the guided photo assessment. If your own town is not listed, open the nearest one instead — orthodontic patients routinely travel to a neighbouring town, and fixed brace adjustments are usually only every six to eight weeks, so a slightly longer journey matters less than it would for routine dental care.
