NHS dental charges are set separately in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. In every nation, eligible young people pay nothing for NHS orthodontic treatment; what differs is the age limit and what adults pay.
| Nation | Young people | Adults |
|---|---|---|
| England | NHS orthodontic treatment is free for under-18s who meet the clinical threshold. | Adults who do qualify pay the NHS Band 3 charge, £332.10 in England from April 2026, which covers the whole course. |
| Scotland | In Scotland, NHS dental treatment — including clinically necessary orthodontics — is free for everyone under 26. | Adults aged 26 and over who qualify pay 80% of the NHS fee, capped at £384 for a course of treatment. |
| Wales | NHS orthodontic treatment is free for under-18s who meet the clinical threshold. | Adults who do qualify pay NHS Wales dental charges, capped at £384 for a course of treatment. |
| Northern Ireland | NHS orthodontic treatment is free for under-18s who meet the clinical threshold. | Adults who do qualify pay 80% of the Health Service fee, capped at £384 for a course of treatment. |
