Retainers and keeping teeth straight

What types of retainers are there?

The main types are fixed bonded retainers (a thin wire cemented behind the teeth, usually the lower front six), removable Essix retainers (a clear plastic tray similar in appearance to an aligner), removable Hawley retainers (a wire and acrylic plate), and combined approaches using both a fixed wire and a removable tray. Each has different maintenance requirements and longevity.
