What short-term orthodontics means
Short-term orthodontics focuses on the visible smile, usually front teeth seen when talking and smiling. It may use tooth-coloured fixed braces or aligners with a limited objective.
Who it can suit
It can suit adults with mild to moderate front crowding, spacing or rotations where the back bite is already acceptable. It is less suitable when the main issue is overjet, underbite, crossbite, deep bite or jaw discrepancy.
What it cannot promise
A six-month target may not allow full root positioning, bite finishing or major arch coordination. Teeth may look straighter from the front while the bite remains largely unchanged.
Consent and UK quotes
Private quotes should clearly say whether treatment is limited objective or comprehensive. Ask what happens if treatment takes longer than expected and whether retainers and refinements are included.
Compared with comprehensive braces
Comprehensive orthodontics treats the whole bite and usually takes longer. Limited cosmetic treatment can still be valid if the compromise is documented and clinically safe.
Red flags
Be cautious if complex bite problems are promised a very fast fix, if no records are taken, if retainers are presented as optional, or if limitations are not discussed.
