Veneers vs Braces — Which Is Right for You?

Braces and aligners move teeth into the correct position. Veneers change how teeth look without moving them. For structurally healthy misaligned teeth, orthodontic treatment is almost always the more appropriate choice — and the GDC has raised serious concerns about dentists recommending veneers as a shortcut instead.

Core difference between veneers and braces

Veneers are thin shells of porcelain or composite resin bonded to the front surface of teeth. They change the visible shape and colour of a tooth but do not move it. To fit a veneer, enamel — and sometimes dentine — must be permanently removed from the tooth surface. This is irreversible. Braces and aligners move teeth through biological bone remodelling. The teeth themselves are unchanged; their position in the jaw changes. These are fundamentally different treatments with different clinical applications.

When veneers are appropriate

Veneers are appropriate for permanently discoloured teeth where whitening cannot achieve the desired result — such as tetracycline staining or fluorosis. They suit chipped, worn, or unusually shaped teeth where the tooth structure needs restoration. Where teeth are proportionally too small for the arch, veneers can add size and improve proportion. Veneers are not a shortcut to straight teeth and should not be used as a substitute for orthodontic treatment in teeth that are structurally healthy and simply misaligned.

The instant orthodontics problem

A significant concern raised by the GDC is the practice of recommending veneers as an alternative to braces for patients with crooked but structurally healthy teeth — sometimes called instant orthodontics. This involves filing down perfectly sound teeth and covering them with thick veneers to create the appearance of alignment. The GDC guidance states this is not in patients best interests: it commits the patient to a lifetime of veneer replacements every 10 to 20 years, permanently destroys irreplaceable enamel, and addresses only appearance without correcting bite, function, or hygiene access. If a dentist recommends veneers for crooked but healthy teeth, ask them to explain specifically why orthodontics is not the more appropriate option.

When to choose braces or aligners

For teeth that are structurally healthy and well-coloured but misaligned, orthodontic treatment is almost always the more appropriate choice. It moves the teeth without removing any tooth structure. The result is permanent with teeth held in correct positions by retainers. It avoids the ongoing cost and dental intervention of replacing veneers every decade. It can also improve gum health by creating better cleaning access, and correct bite problems that veneers cannot address.

Can I have both veneers and braces?

Yes — and this is often the best approach. Orthodontic treatment first moves the teeth into the correct position, optimising the bite and creating the ideal foundation. Veneers or composite bonding can then refine the shape or colour of individual teeth. This sequence minimises the amount of tooth reduction needed and produces the best long-term aesthetic and functional result. Always complete orthodontics before committing to cosmetic work on the surface of your teeth.
