Online Braces Consultation UK

An online braces consultation lets a clinician review guided photos of your teeth and bite to give an early indication of likely treatment options, before you commit to a full in-person appointment. It cannot replace a clinical examination, but it helps you understand likely options and typical costs first.

What an online braces consultation can assess

A clinician reviewing standardised photographs can assess: visible crowding and tooth overlap; apparent spacing or gaps; overjet (horizontal front tooth projection); visible overbite or underbite; obvious crossbite or asymmetry; general gum appearance and oral hygiene; previous orthodontic treatment and visible relapse; and whether fixed braces, clear aligners, or another route seems most likely appropriate. This gives a useful early indication before any paid consultation appointment, particularly if you are researching multiple providers.

What online photos cannot assess

Remote photo review has clear clinical limits. It cannot assess: root position and root resorption risk (requires X-rays); bone levels around teeth (requires dental X-rays and clinical probing); gum pocketing and periodontal status (requires clinical examination); hidden decay under existing restorations; jaw joint health and jaw opening; skeletal jaw relationships (requires lateral cephalometric X-ray); the precision required to plan extractions; and the exact bite measurement in all three dimensions. These are not minor omissions — they are clinically critical for planning any fixed brace treatment.

How to take photos that give clinicians the best information

The most useful photo set includes: a front-on smile photo; a front-on clinical retracted photo (teeth slightly apart, lips pulled back); a left lateral bite photo; a right lateral bite photo; an upper arch occlusal (from above, looking down at upper teeth); a lower arch occlusal (from below, looking up at lower teeth); and a profile photo. Good lighting is essential — window light or ring light, no backlighting. Sharp focus with no shadows over the teeth. If you have a bite concern, bite naturally and photograph it — do not try to show what you think the ideal bite looks like.

What to include in your assessment request

Beyond photos, useful information to include: your age; which teeth specifically concern you; whether you had orthodontic treatment before and when; whether you currently wear or wore retainers; any pain, clicking, or jaw discomfort; previous dental work (crowns, implants, bridges, veneers); current NHS or private dental care; your preferred treatment type (braces, aligners, or unsure); and your timing and budget range. The more context a clinician has, the more useful their indicative response will be.

The difference between an online assessment and DTC aligners

An online braces consultation that routes you to a real clinician for review — followed by an in-person appointment before treatment starts — is safe and clinically responsible. Direct-to-consumer aligner companies that provide treatment without any in-person clinical contact are a different model entirely. DTC systems bypass clinical examination, X-rays, and gum assessment — all of which are essential before moving teeth. The British Orthodontic Society, GDC, and NHS England advise against DTC orthodontic treatment. A virtual consultation is a first step toward proper supervised treatment, not a replacement for it.

Next steps after an online braces consultation

After an online review, a clinician should be able to indicate: whether braces or aligners are likely worth exploring; what case type you appear to have (mild, moderate, complex); indicative treatment options and typical price ranges; and whether an in-person consultation is recommended and what to bring. This information lets you compare providers, prepare questions for paid consultations, and decide whether pursuing treatment now makes sense for your situation.

An online consultation can support early triage and quote guidance, but it does not replace a full clinical examination, X-rays, scans, or diagnosis.
