GDC Registered Orthodontist UK
In the UK, all practising dentists and orthodontists must be registered with the General Dental Council (GDC). But there is an important distinction between a GDC-registered general dentist who offers orthodontics and a GDC-listed specialist orthodontist. Here is what the difference means for you — and how to verify who you are seeing.
What is GDC registration?
The General Dental Council (GDC) is the UK regulator for dental professionals. It is illegal for anyone to carry out the practice of dentistry in the UK without being registered with the GDC. This applies to all dental professionals — dentists, dental hygienists, dental nurses, dental technicians, and clinical dental technicians.
GDC registration means the professional has: a recognised dental qualification, has passed the relevant fitness to practise assessments, holds indemnity insurance, and commits to continuing professional development each year. You can check anyone's GDC registration status using the GDC's public register at gdc-uk.org.
Dentist vs specialist orthodontist — what is the difference?
| Factor | General dentist with orthodontic training | GDC specialist orthodontist |
|---|---|---|
| Training | BDS plus short orthodontic courses | BDS + 3-year full-time postgraduate orthodontic training (MClinDent/MOrth) |
| GDC listing | Registered as a dentist (not on specialist list) | On GDC Specialist List in Orthodontics |
| Title | Cannot call themselves a "specialist orthodontist" | Entitled to use the title "specialist orthodontist" or "specialist in orthodontics" |
| NHS | Can provide some NHS orthodontics but less common | All NHS orthodontic referrals go to GDC specialists |
| Case complexity | Suitable for straightforward cases | Trained for the full range including complex bite and jaw problems |
How to verify a GDC specialist orthodontist
Step 1: Go to the GDC's online register at gdc-uk.org/check-a-dental-professional's-registration
Step 2: Search the professional's name or GDC registration number (if known). Every registered professional has a unique GDC number.
Step 3: Check the registration type. A specialist orthodontist will show "Specialist in Orthodontics" under their registration details.
Step 4: Confirm registration status is "Current" and there are no restrictions, conditions, or suspension notices on the record.
Red flags to watch for
Any provider who cannot give you a GDC registration number on request
Clinics that use the title "orthodontic specialist" or "specialist orthodontist" for professionals not on the GDC specialist list — this is a criminal offence
Direct-to-consumer aligner companies that post impression kits without any clinical assessment
Providers who do not take X-rays before starting treatment (X-rays are a clinical necessity, not optional)
Unusually low prices that seem too good to be true — quality orthodontic treatment has a real clinical cost
