The cleft care team
Cleft orthodontics is usually planned within a multidisciplinary team involving orthodontists, cleft surgeons, speech and language therapists, paediatric dentists, restorative dentists, nurses and psychologists.
Early dental monitoring
Children with cleft lip or palate may have missing, extra or displaced teeth, narrow upper arches and crossbites. Monitoring helps time expansion, eruption guidance and hygiene support.
Alveolar bone graft timing
An alveolar bone graft is often planned before canine eruption. Orthodontic expansion may be needed beforehand to align the arch segments and prepare the graft site.
Teenage orthodontics
Fixed braces commonly align teeth, coordinate arches and prepare for restorative work. Treatment is often more staged and longer than routine orthodontics.
Jaw growth and surgery
Some patients develop upper jaw deficiency and may need orthognathic surgery after growth. Orthodontics prepares the teeth before surgery and finishes the bite afterwards.
Adult cleft orthodontics
Adults may need combined orthodontic, restorative and surgical planning for missing teeth, relapse, implants, bridges or bite changes. Specialist team input remains important.
