Does the NHS fund Invisalign?
No. The NHS does not fund Invisalign, ClearCorrect, Spark, SureSmile, or any other clear aligner system. NHS orthodontic commissioning is based on clinical need (IOTN score) and cost-effectiveness, and NHS-funded treatment uses fixed metal braces as the standard appliance. Clear aligners are significantly more expensive to manufacture and are not included within the NHS Band 3 treatment pathway.
What does the NHS cover?
NHS orthodontic treatment — available for eligible patients under 18 with an IOTN score of DHC 3.6 or higher — covers fixed metal braces. The entire course of treatment, including all adjustment appointments and a set of retainers, is covered by a single Band 3 charge of £332.10 (2026 rate). Under-18s pay nothing, and nor do 18-year-olds in qualifying full-time education.
Some NHS orthodontic services use clear functional appliances (such as twin blocks) for growing patients where indicated, but these are not the same as clear aligner systems like Invisalign.
How much does Invisalign cost privately?
| Treatment type | Typical cost (UK 2026) | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Invisalign Lite | £2,000 – £3,500 | Minor alignment; up to 14 aligner stages |
| Invisalign Moderate | £2,500 – £4,500 | Moderate complexity; up to 26 stages |
| Invisalign Comprehensive | £2,500 – £5,500 | Complex cases; unlimited aligners |
| Invisalign Teen | £2,500 – £5,500 | Teenagers; includes compliance indicators and replacement aligners |
| Other clear aligners (e.g. ClearCorrect, Spark) | £1,500 – £5,500 | Similar outcomes; fee set by each practice |
Are there cheaper alternatives to Invisalign?
Yes. Invisalign is the best-known brand but is not the only option. Other GDC-registered orthodontist-prescribed clear aligner systems — such as ClearCorrect, Spark by Ormco, and SureSmile — can achieve comparable results for many patients. Their fees are set by each practice rather than published, so ask for an itemised quote. The key is that the aligner system is prescribed and monitored by a GDC-registered orthodontist, not a direct-to-consumer company that bypasses clinical oversight.
Most private practices also offer 0% interest payment plans over 12–24 months, reducing the monthly cost significantly.
Can children get clear aligners?
Clear aligners can be used for teenagers and, in some cases, younger children — Invisalign First is designed for patients as young as 6–10. However, children eligible for NHS treatment will receive fixed metal braces. Clear aligners for children are a private treatment, and compliance (wearing them for 20–22 hours per day) is critical — which can be challenging for younger patients.
