Braces for Overbite UK: Deep Bite Treatment Guide

See when fixed braces may be recommended for overbite correction and what to ask before comparing braces and clear aligners.

Types of overbite and what they mean for treatment

An overbite is when the upper front teeth overlap vertically over the lower front teeth. A normal overbite is 2–3mm. A deep overbite (4mm+) means the lower teeth may bite into the palate or be hidden. A dental overbite is caused by tooth position and can often be corrected with braces or aligners. A skeletal overbite involves jaw position discrepancy — the lower jaw is set back relative to the upper — which may need functional appliances in growing patients or jaw surgery (orthognathic surgery) in adults. Accurate diagnosis requires a lateral cephalometric X-ray and clinical assessment.

How fixed braces treat overbite

Fixed braces are the most versatile tool for overbite correction. They can intrude (push up) the lower front teeth, extrude (bring down) the back teeth to open the bite, use bite turbos or bite plates to temporarily separate the back teeth allowing the bite to open, use class II elastics to pull the lower jaw forward if the overjet is also large, and control all tooth movements simultaneously across multiple teeth. Fixed braces are generally preferred for deep or complex overbites because they provide more precise three-dimensional control than removable appliances.

When clear aligners may be used for overbite

Clear aligners (Invisalign Comprehensive and similar full-coverage systems) can manage mild to moderate dental overbites effectively. Attachments on the lower front teeth allow intrusion mechanics. Aligners are less predictable for very deep overbites requiring significant bite opening, and for skeletal overbites requiring jaw position correction. Many orthodontists use a combination: clear aligners for alignment, with elastics worn between upper and lower trays for additional bite correction. A specialist assessment is needed to confirm whether your overbite is within aligner range.

NHS vs private overbite treatment

NHS orthodontic treatment is available for under-18s with clinically significant overbites — IOTN Grade 4 typically includes overjet greater than 6mm and specific overbite categories. Adult overbite treatment on the NHS is not routinely available. Private treatment costs vary: metal braces typically £1,500–£3,500 and ceramic £2,000–£4,500, with complex deep bite cases towards the upper end; clear aligners £2,500–£5,500 for comprehensive cases. Cases requiring orthognathic surgery may be NHS-funded for the surgical component if clinically indicated.

Functional appliances for growing patients

For children and teenagers with a skeletal Class II pattern (lower jaw set back), functional appliances such as the Twin Block, Forsus springs, or Herbst appliance are used before or alongside fixed braces. These use the growth phase to guide the lower jaw forward, potentially reducing the need for surgery in adulthood. Functional appliance treatment is only appropriate during the growth phase — it is not effective in fully grown adults. A GDC specialist orthodontist or orthodontic consultant can assess whether functional appliances are appropriate.

What to ask your orthodontist before treatment

Before committing to overbite treatment, ask: Is my overbite dental or skeletal? Do I need functional appliances, fixed braces, aligners, or a combination? Is jaw surgery a possibility I should plan for? What is the overjet (horizontal overlap) as well as the overbite (vertical overlap), and how does each affect the plan? How will the bite change affect my appearance? Are retainers included, and what will retention look like after bite correction? Get written answers to these questions before signing a treatment contract.
