Brace Colours UK — Which Suit Your Skin Tone

Beyond staining and durability, the ligature colours in a metal brace sit directly against your teeth and lips, so they can visibly warm up or wash out your complexion. Here is how to pick shades that flatter your skin tone rather than fight it.

Why skin tone changes how a colour reads

Ligature colours sit right at the mouth, so they are seen next to lips, teeth, and skin all at once — the same shade can look completely different against different complexions. Colours with a lot of yellow or orange in them tend to flatter warmer, more golden or olive undertones, while blue-based colours tend to flatter cooler, pinker undertones. Very pale or very saturated neon shades can also make teeth look duller by contrast, regardless of skin tone, which is worth bearing in mind alongside the staining advice in our main colour guide.

Fair or pale skin tones

Fair skin with pink or cool undertones is generally flattered by jewel tones — sapphire blue, emerald green, deep purple, and burgundy all sit well against paler complexions without looking harsh. Very pale shades such as white, light yellow, or pastel pink can wash out fair skin and draw attention to any redness, on top of being the shades most prone to visible staining. Black and silver both read as neutral and smart against fair skin.

Olive or medium skin tones

Olive and medium skin tones, which usually carry warmer golden or green undertones, tend to suit earthy and warm colours well — teal, forest green, amber-leaning orange, coral pink, and gold-flecked shades if your practice stocks them. Cooler icy pastels can occasionally look slightly flat against olive undertones, whereas jewel tones and warm mid-tones tend to look rich rather than washed out.

Deep or dark skin tones

Deep skin tones carry bold, saturated colours particularly well, since there is more contrast between the ligature and the surrounding skin. Bright colours such as hot pink, cobalt blue, emerald, and orange tend to stand out in a flattering way rather than looking pale or lost. Black ligatures against deep skin tones give the most subtle, low-contrast look if a discreet appearance is the priority, while metallic silver also blends cleanly.

Warm versus cool undertones — a quick test

If you are not sure whether your undertone is warm or cool, look at the veins on the inside of your wrist in natural daylight: greenish veins usually mean a warm undertone, while bluish or purple veins usually mean a cool undertone. Warm undertones generally suit orange-based, golden, and earthy ligature colours, while cool undertones generally suit blue-based, pink, and jewel-toned colours. This is only a loose guide — personal preference and what you enjoy looking at every day matters more than any formula.

Colours that suit most skin tones

A handful of shades read as flattering across almost every skin tone because they are either neutral or sit at a saturation level that avoids clashing with undertones. Navy blue, deep purple, black, and silver are the safest universally flattering choices, and all four also happen to be strong performers for hiding staining between appointments, so they work well on both fronts.

Testing a colour before you commit

Most UK orthodontic practices keep a colour chart or a set of loose sample ligatures that you can hold up against your own teeth and skin under normal lighting before choosing. It is worth asking to see two or three options side by side rather than choosing from a printed chart alone, since chart colours can look different under clinic lighting than they do against your actual complexion. Because ligatures are replaced at every adjustment appointment, there is no commitment beyond a few weeks if a shade does not turn out the way you expected.
