Bupa Dental Care Orthodontics & Clear Aligners
A UK and Ireland group of over 350 NHS and private dental practices offering Invisalign, plus around 28 specialist Total Orthodontics practices. This page covers UK cost, insurance coverage, NHS availability, and which conditions Bupa Dental Care typically treats, so you can compare it against other providers and brands before booking a consultation.
Overview
Bupa Dental Care is the dental practice arm of Bupa. Its own About Us page describes a network of over 350 practices across the UK and Ireland, providing both NHS and private dentistry to over two million patients, with a team of more than 2,500 dental professionals. The network is smaller than it was: in 2023 Bupa announced it would close, sell or merge 85 UK practices, citing dentist shortages and rising costs. Invisalign is offered at many Bupa Dental Care practices. Alongside the general practices, Bupa owns Total Orthodontics, a separate brand of around 28 specialist-orthodontist-led practices that treat adults and children with Invisalign, ceramic braces, lingual braces and fixed braces, and accept private patients, dentist referrals and NHS referrals for under-18s. Bupa Dental Care and Bupa dental insurance share a parent brand but are different products, so being a Bupa insurance customer does not mean orthodontic treatment at a Bupa practice is covered.
Which Brands It Offers
Bupa Dental Care offers Invisalign through its network — availability of a specific brand depends on your local practice, so ask when booking a consultation.
NHS Availability
Invisalign and other clear aligners are private treatment at Bupa Dental Care — adult teeth straightening is treated as cosmetic and isn't available on the NHS. NHS orthodontics within the group mainly runs through Total Orthodontics, which says some of its practices offer NHS treatment to under-18s who qualify, and that it accepts NHS referrals from a general dentist. Eligibility is decided by the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN), so only more severe problems qualify. NHS orthodontic treatment is free for under-18s; the adult NHS Band 3 charge in England is £332.10. Check with your nearest Total Orthodontics practice whether it currently holds an NHS contract.
Insurance Coverage in the UK
Bupa's UK dental insurance documentation lists cosmetic treatment and orthodontic treatment among the things it doesn't cover, and orthodontic treatment is also listed as an exclusion from the Bupa Smile Plan payment plan. So having a Bupa dental product does not mean Invisalign at a Bupa Dental Care practice is covered, even though the practice and the insurer share a parent brand. Other insurers' cash plans or orthodontic benefit lines may contribute to clear aligner treatment depending on their own wording, whichever practice group provides it — check your specific policy document, waiting periods and caps before paying a deposit.
Cost & Financing
Bupa Dental Care's Invisalign page (checked September 2026) does not publish a price range — it says cost varies with case complexity and the type of Invisalign aligners needed, and that your dentist explains the full cost before treatment. It offers patient finance at 0% APR on orthodontic treatments costing between £250 and £50,000 over 3 to 36 months, subject to status. For under-18s, Total Orthodontics advertises Orthodontic Essentials, a private fixed-price option at £3,190. Typical UK private prices are around £2,500–£5,500 for Invisalign and £1,500–£3,500 for metal fixed braces, so ask for a written treatment plan and itemised quote.
Best For: Bupa Dental Care Suitability by Condition
Underbite: Mild to moderate cases only. Bupa Dental Care's Invisalign offering can address mild to moderate underbites using attachments and inter-arch elastics where needed. Significant skeletal underbites usually need fixed braces or a combined orthodontic-surgical approach, potentially through the group's Total Orthodontics specialist practices. Overbite: Mild to moderate cases only. Mild to moderate deep bites are commonly treated with Invisalign, often with bite ramps or attachments. More pronounced overbites, particularly with a skeletal component, are typically better suited to fixed appliances or specialist orthodontic assessment. Gaps / spacing: Well suited. Spacing between teeth is one of the more straightforward movements for Invisalign, since it mainly involves tipping and translating teeth into the gap. Crowding: Mild to moderate crowding. Invisalign at Bupa Dental Care can resolve mild to moderate crowding, sometimes with limited interproximal reduction to create space. Severe crowding often needs extractions, fixed braces, or specialist orthodontic assessment for a stable result. Buck teeth / protrusion: Mild to moderate protrusion. Mildly to moderately protruding front teeth can be retracted using attachments for grip. Larger protrusions, especially with a skeletal cause, are usually assessed for fixed braces or a combined approach.
Suitability for Kids & Teens
Children's orthodontics in the Bupa group is mainly delivered by Total Orthodontics, which offers NHS treatment for under-18s who qualify, private options including Invisalign Teen, and its fixed-price Orthodontic Essentials treatment. Its NHS route needs a referral from your child's general dentist. Suitability for a still-developing dentition is a clinical decision made by the treating specialist orthodontist.
