Clear Aligner Buyer's Guide

Compare the total price including any refinement rounds, whether retainers are included after treatment, the number of in-person or remote check-up appointments, what happens if a tray is lost or damaged, and whether payment is spread over interest-free instalments. Two providers quoting the same brand can differ by over a thousand pounds once refinements and retainers are added, so ask for a fully itemised quote rather than a headline price.

No. The brand — Invisalign, Spark, SureSmile or ClearCorrect — determines the material and manufacturing process, but the provider determines the treatment plan, monitoring frequency, and what is included if your case needs adjusting. Two clinics using the same brand can offer very different levels of support, so compare the provider's aftercare and refinement policy alongside the brand itself.

Some remote-only aligner services skip in-person assessment and rely solely on a mould kit, which increases the risk of ill-fitting trays or unsuitable case selection. A supervised route with a GDC-registered dentist or orthodontist reviewing your case — either in person or via monitored remote check-ins — is generally safer for anything beyond very mild crowding. Always confirm a registered clinician is overseeing your treatment before paying a deposit.

A complete quote should state the number of aligner trays, the number of refinement rounds included if your teeth need extra movement, whether a retainer is included after treatment finishes, and the number of review appointments. Some providers charge extra for refinements or retainers as add-ons, which can add several hundred pounds to the advertised price, so always ask what happens beyond the initial treatment plan.

Mild crowding or spacing typically takes three to six months with clear aligners, while moderate cases usually take nine to eighteen months. Complex bite corrections can take up to two years. Your exact timeline depends on how much movement is needed and how consistently you wear the aligners for the recommended twenty to twenty-two hours per day.

Most providers build one or more refinement rounds into the treatment plan, where new aligners are made partway through to correct any tracking issues. Ask before starting whether refinements are included in the quoted price or charged separately, since this is one of the most common places where costs increase unexpectedly.

A photo-based virtual assessment through Virtual Consultant Online lets you upload guided photos from home and receive an indication of suitability and estimated cost before booking a paid consultation. This helps you compare providers on a like-for-like basis and arrive at in-person appointments with clearer questions about refinements, retainers and payment terms.
