Managing Sensitivity After Whitening
Sensitivity is the most common side effect — usually a sharp, transient twinge with air or cold that settles within 24–48 hours. A sensitivity toothpaste used for two weeks beforehand noticeably reduces it.
For 48 hours afterwards, avoid intensely pigmented foods and drinks — coffee, tea, red wine, berries, tomato sauces — while the enamel is temporarily more porous. Results typically last 12–24 months before a short top-up restores the shade.
The VITA Shade Guide Explained
Dental professionals in Kirktown of Auchterless use the VITA classical shade guide to record tooth colour, running from A1 (lightest) to C4 (darkest). Most natural teeth sit between A2 and B3, and professional whitening typically lifts 4–8 grades.
Not all teeth respond equally. Intrinsic staining from tetracycline or fluorosis whitens poorly, yellow tones respond best, and grey tones least. Crowns, veneers and fillings don't change colour at all, which can create mismatches to plan around.
