Professional teeth whitening is one of the most popular cosmetic dental treatments there is. In Kirktown of Alvah it is a common request, and results go well beyond what a supermarket kit can manage. The timescale ranges from a single 90-minute visit to a fortnight of overnight tray wear.
How Tooth Colour Is Measured
Colour is tracked on the VITA scale — A1 at the light end through to C4 at the dark. Untreated teeth usually fall around A2–B3 in Kirktown of Alvah patients, with whitening moving them several grades lighter.
Not all teeth respond equally. Intrinsic staining from tetracycline or fluorosis whitens poorly, yellow tones respond best, and grey tones least. Crowns, veneers and fillings don't change colour at all, which can create mismatches to plan around.

Whitening Options Available in Kirktown of Alvah
In-chair (laser/light-activated) whitening is done at the practice in one 60–90 minute appointment. A high-concentration gel is applied and activated with a light or laser, giving immediate results — typically a 4–8 shade lift, depending on your starting point.
Take-home tray whitening uses custom trays and professional-strength gel worn daily (30 minutes to overnight) over 2–4 weeks. It builds a gradual result with less sensitivity than in-chair treatment.
Combined whitening (an in-chair session followed by take-home top-ups) is often recommended in Kirktown of Alvah because it maximises the initial jump and lets you maintain the shade over time.
Over-the-counter kits are legally capped at very low peroxide levels and can't match professional results. They suit minor maintenance at best, not a genuine shade change.
