# Orthodontic Travel and Visit Planner

Enter your town or postcode district to see how far each nearby practice is, how many visits a course of braces or aligners usually needs, and what the journeys add up to in miles, hours and running costs.

## Plan the journeys

This is an estimate for planning, not a quote or clinical advice. Your practice will give the real schedule. [How the figures are worked out](https://virtualconsultant.online/about/methodology).

## What the planner works out

Orthodontic treatment is not one appointment. A course of fixed braces typically means a consultation, a fitting, between 7 and 17 adjustments, a removal and retainer checks, which is roughly 13 to 25 visits. Clear aligners usually need fewer, around 6 to 10. If the nearest practice is a long way off, those journeys add up. This planner shows how much, practice by practice.

| Assumption | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Distance | Straight-line from the centre of your town, or your postcode district, to each practice on our register |
| Road distance | Straight-line distance plus 30% |
| Speed | An average of 35 mph, rounded to the nearest five minutes |
| Fixed braces | About 13 to 25 visits across the course |
| Clear aligners | About 6 to 10 visits across the course |
| Running cost | 45p a mile, the HMRC rate for business driving |

### Travel and visits: questions

How many visits does a course of braces need?

Typically a consultation, a fitting, between 7 and 17 adjustments, a removal and a few retainer checks in the first year, which is roughly 13 to 25 visits. The exact schedule depends on your case and the practice.

Do clear aligners need fewer visits?

Usually, because trays are changed at home and progress checks are less frequent, so around 6 to 10 visits is typical. Ask any practice how many a plan for your case would involve.

How is the journey time worked out?

From the straight-line distance, adding 30% for roads and assuming an average of 35 mph, rounded to the nearest five minutes. It is an estimate, not a route.

Does this tell me which practice to choose?

No. It only compares journeys. It does not rank practices by quality or say which treatment suits you; that needs an examination by a clinician.

Why is my town not found?

Try a nearby larger town, or the first part of your postcode, such as LS25. Our place list covers towns, villages and hamlets across the UK.
