# Braces Before a Wedding: A Deadline Planner

Enter the date and see when you would need to start for a typical course to finish in time, and what to ask a practice about the schedule.

## Work back from the date

This uses typical course lengths. It is not a prediction for your teeth: only an orthodontist who has examined you can give an expected finish date. [How we compile this](https://virtualconsultant.online/about/methodology).

## What to ask a practice

What is the expected finish date for my case, and how confident is it?

What happens if treatment is not finished by my date?

How many appointments are there before the date, and when does the last adjustment fall?

Will I be in a retainer, and at what point does it start?

Is any preparatory dental work needed before treatment can begin, and how long does it take?

Is the fee the same if the plan is shortened or lengthened?

### Braces and a fixed date: questions

How long before a wedding should I start braces?

Typical courses of fixed braces run 12 to 24 months and clear aligners 3 to 18 months, so working back from the date, it is sensible to allow at least that long plus a month or two of margin. Your own expected finish date can only come from a practice.

Can I get braces off before a specific date?

It depends on your case and the practice's plan. Ask for an expected finish date and what the practice would do if treatment is running late; do not assume a date can be guaranteed.

Do I need a retainer straight after braces?

Retainers are normally needed after any orthodontic treatment to hold the result, and are usually fitted the day the braces come off or the final aligner is confirmed.

Does this tell me whether treatment will work in time?

No. It only compares typical course lengths with the time you have. Whether a shorter course suits you needs an examination by a clinician.

What if there is not enough time?

A practice can tell you whether anything shorter is possible, or whether it is better to start after the date. Starting later is often the less stressful choice.
