## Compare the total payable amount

Monthly payment figures are easy to compare, but the number that matters is the full cost over the whole plan: deposit, every instalment, any interest or fees, and anything the financed fee leaves out. Private treatment typically costs £1,500 to £3,500 for metal braces, £2,000 to £4,500 for ceramic, £4,000 to £8,000 for lingual, £2,500 to £5,500 for Invisalign and £1,500 to £5,500 for supervised clear aligners.

## Ways to pay for orthodontic treatment in the UK

There are five main routes. An in-house practice plan spreads the fee over monthly instalments, often at 0% for 12 to 24 months. Regulated dental finance, arranged by the practice through lenders such as Chrysalis Finance, Medenta or Tabeo, can run for longer terms with or without interest. A personal loan from a bank, building society or credit union is taken out independently of the practice. Some patients use a 0% purchase credit card or a buy-now-pay-later product. Finally, NHS treatment is free for under-18s in England who meet the IOTN threshold, and adults accepted for NHS orthodontics in exceptional cases pay the Band 3 charge of £332.10.

## In-house plans vs regulated dental finance

With an in-house plan you pay a deposit, commonly 10% to 30% of the fee, and then instalments directly to the practice. There is usually no formal credit agreement and often no credit check, but the statutory protections of regulated credit do not apply, so any dispute is with the practice alone. Regulated dental finance is a consumer credit agreement under the Consumer Credit Act 1974, supervised by the Financial Conduct Authority. The lender must assess affordability, you have 14 days to withdraw after signing, and unresolved complaints can go to the Financial Ombudsman Service. A practice arranging regulated credit must be FCA-authorised or an appointed representative of a lender, so ask for its FCA reference number.

## 0% finance vs interest-bearing plans, and what APR means

Genuine 0% finance means you repay exactly the amount borrowed. Lenders do not offer it for free: the practice pays a subsidy, which some practices absorb and others build into the fee, so ask whether paying upfront earns a discount. Check for set-up or administration fees and for terms that switch to interest after a missed payment. Interest-bearing plans quote an APR, which includes interest and mandatory fees; the representative APR is the rate at least 51% of successful applicants receive. As a worked example, £3,000 at 0% over 24 months is £125 a month and £3,000 in total, while £3,000 at 12.9% APR over 24 months is about £141.49 a month and £3,396 in total.

## Personal loans, credit cards and buy-now-pay-later

A personal loan is not tied to one practice and lets you pay the full fee upfront, which some practices reward with a discount. It involves a hard credit search, and it only saves money if its APR is lower than the practice finance on offer. A 0% purchase credit card can work if the fee fits your limit and you clear it before the promotional period ends; a card at its standard rate is usually the most expensive way to fund treatment. Buy-now-pay-later products tend to have lower limits than dental finance, and missed payments can bring late fees and marks on your credit file.

## What the financed amount should cover

Before signing, confirm in writing whether the financed fee includes records such as scans and X-rays, all appliances or aligners, review appointments, repairs, refinements and retainers. Retainers charged separately at the end of treatment typically add £200 to £600, and replacement retainers in later years cost roughly £80 to £350 per arch depending on type (a Vivera set is £300 to £500). Some practices offer retainer maintenance plans for a small monthly fee. A finance agreement usually covers the agreed treatment, not the outcome, so also ask what happens to payments if treatment runs longer than planned or has to stop early.

## Dental insurance and cash plans

Standard UK dental insurance rarely funds orthodontic treatment in any meaningful way; policies usually exclude it or cap it at a modest amount. Dental cash plans may pay a small annual allowance that can go towards treatment, but it will not cover a full course. Some employer benefit schemes include a higher orthodontic allowance, so it is worth checking with your HR team before choosing a finance route.

### Frequently Asked Questions

What should I ask before using orthodontic finance?

Ask for the deposit, monthly payment, number of payments, total payable amount, any interest or admin charges, and what happens if you settle early. The total payable amount is the most important number — a low monthly figure can mask a long repayment term or additional fees that make the overall cost significantly higher than the quoted treatment price. Also ask whether the practice is FCA-authorised to arrange the credit and what the financed fee includes.

Is 0% interest orthodontic finance actually free?

0% interest plans do not charge interest, but they are not always cost-neutral. Some practices factor finance arrangement fees into the quoted treatment price, or offer a different price for upfront payment versus financed payment. Always ask whether the total payable amount is the same regardless of payment method, and whether there is a discount for upfront payment. Third-party dental finance providers such as Chrysalis Finance, Medenta, and Tabeo each have their own terms — read the full agreement before signing.

What are Chrysalis Finance, Medenta and Tabeo?

They are specialist lenders that UK dental and orthodontic practices use to offer regulated patient finance. Products range from short interest-free terms to longer interest-bearing plans, and the practice arranges the application on the lender's behalf. Because these are regulated consumer credit agreements, you get an affordability assessment, a 14-day right to withdraw after signing, and access to the Financial Ombudsman Service if a complaint cannot be resolved with the lender. Check the APR and total repayable on the written agreement.

How much deposit do orthodontic practices usually ask for?

Deposits for orthodontic treatment in UK practices typically range from £200 to £500 for clear aligner treatment and from £300 to £800 for fixed brace treatment, though this varies significantly. The deposit is usually required at the records appointment or when treatment is booked. Confirm whether the deposit is refundable if you decide not to proceed, and ask for a written deposit policy before paying. Deposits for Invisalign and other lab-fabricated appliances often reflect the laboratory manufacture cost and may be non-refundable once production begins.

Can I get orthodontic finance with bad credit?

It is possible but more limited. Regulated lenders run credit checks, and missed payments, defaults or county court judgements can lead to a decline or a higher APR. If you are declined, ask whether the practice runs an in-house instalment plan without a formal credit check, usually with a larger deposit and fewer months. Another practice using a different lender may reach a different decision, and some lenders accept a guarantor with a stronger credit history.

Is a personal loan better than practice finance for braces?

It depends on the rates available to you. If the practice offers genuine 0% finance over 12 to 24 months and the instalments are affordable, that is usually cheapest because you repay only the fee. If the practice only offers interest-bearing finance, a personal loan at a lower APR may cost less over the same term and lets you pay upfront, sometimes for a discount. Compare the total amount repayable on each option, not the monthly figure.

What happens if I miss a payment on orthodontic finance?

On a regulated credit agreement, a missed payment can bring a late fee, interest from the missed date and a report to credit reference agencies that affects your credit score. The lender must follow FCA rules before taking further action. On an in-house plan, the practice's own terms apply and some practices pause treatment until arrears are cleared. If you expect to struggle, contact the lender or practice manager before the payment is due to agree a revised schedule.

Can I pay off orthodontic finance early?

Yes. Under the Consumer Credit Act you have the right to settle a regulated credit agreement early, in full or in part, and to receive a rebate of the interest you would otherwise have paid, although the lender may apply a limited early settlement adjustment. On a 0% plan there is no interest to save, so early settlement simply clears the balance. Ask the lender for a written settlement figure before paying.

What happens to orthodontic finance if treatment takes longer than expected?

Most practice payment plan agreements cover the agreed course of treatment regardless of how long it takes, subject to the terms of the plan. Third-party finance agreements typically cover the cost to the agreed end date rather than the treatment outcome. If treatment extends significantly beyond the original plan, ask your practice in writing whether there will be any additional charge. Well-written treatment contracts include provisions for extended treatment caused by factors outside the patient's control — check whether yours does before signing.

What happens to my finance if I move house or change orthodontist mid-treatment?

Finance is normally tied to the practice and treatment it was arranged for, and the credit agreement is separate from the treatment contract. Moving to a new practice usually means the existing agreement continues or is settled, and the new practice quotes and arranges payment for the remaining treatment. Switching lenders partway through is rarely simpler than asking your current lender to restructure payments. Speak to both practices early if a move is likely.

Is NHS orthodontic treatment free?

For under-18s in England who meet the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need threshold, NHS orthodontic treatment is free, so no finance is needed. Adults are rarely accepted for NHS orthodontics, and those who are pay the Band 3 charge of £332.10 in England. Charges differ in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Checking NHS eligibility first, especially for children, is sensible because the NHS route has no finance cost at all.

Is a low monthly payment always cheaper?

No. A lower monthly payment spread over a longer period may result in a higher total amount paid, particularly if interest applies after an initial 0% period. Compare the total payable amount across the full plan, not the monthly payment, to identify the least expensive option. Where practices offer both upfront payment and finance, ask for the total payable under each scenario and whether an upfront discount applies.

Should finance pages include personal financial advice?

No. These pages explain comparison points and provider questions — they do not provide personal financial advice or recommend specific products. If you are uncertain whether a finance product is right for your circumstances, you may wish to seek independent financial advice.
