## What short-term orthodontics means

Short-term orthodontics focuses on the visible smile, usually front teeth seen when talking and smiling. It may use tooth-coloured fixed braces or aligners with a limited objective.

## Who it can suit

It can suit adults with mild to moderate front crowding, spacing or rotations where the back bite is already acceptable. It is less suitable when the main issue is overjet, underbite, crossbite, deep bite or jaw discrepancy.

## What it cannot promise

A six-month target may not allow full root positioning, bite finishing or major arch coordination. Teeth may look straighter from the front while the bite remains largely unchanged.

## Consent and UK quotes

Private quotes should clearly say whether treatment is limited objective or comprehensive. Ask what happens if treatment takes longer than expected and whether retainers and refinements are included.

## Compared with comprehensive braces

Comprehensive orthodontics treats the whole bite and usually takes longer. Limited cosmetic treatment can still be valid if the compromise is documented and clinically safe.

## Red flags

Be cautious if complex bite problems are promised a very fast fix, if no records are taken, if retainers are presented as optional, or if limitations are not discussed.

### Frequently Asked Questions

Can braces work in six months?

Some limited-objective cosmetic cases can improve visibly in around six months, typically mild front-tooth crowding, spacing or rotations in adults whose back bite is already acceptable. Short-term systems achieve that speed by treating the visible smile rather than the whole bite. Comprehensive orthodontic treatment, which corrects the bite as well as the alignment, more commonly takes 12 to 24 months in the UK. A six-month figure is a target rather than a guarantee, so ask what happens clinically and financially if treatment runs longer than planned.

Is Six Month Smiles NHS treatment?

Six Month Smiles is a private treatment in the UK and is not available on the NHS. NHS orthodontics is funded only where there is a clear clinical need, assessed using the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need, and it is free for under-18s who meet that threshold. Short-term cosmetic systems aim to improve the appearance of the front teeth rather than correct a clinically significant bite problem, so they sit outside NHS funding and are paid for privately at the practice providing them.

Does it fix bite problems?

Short-term cosmetic orthodontics usually leaves the bite largely unchanged, because a six-month plan concentrates on the appearance of the front teeth rather than on how the back teeth meet. Overjet, deep bite, crossbite, open bite and underbite generally need comprehensive treatment, sometimes involving elastics, functional appliances or extractions, and that takes longer. If your main concern is how your teeth bite together rather than how they look from the front, ask directly whether bite correction is part of the plan before agreeing to a limited-objective option.

Are results stable?

Teeth treated with short-term cosmetic orthodontics need retainers for life, exactly as they do after any orthodontic treatment. Teeth drift back towards their original positions once an appliance is removed, and that relapse tendency does not reduce because treatment was quick. Most UK clinicians fit a bonded wire behind the front teeth, a removable retainer worn nightly, or both. Retainers also wear out and need replacing over time, so check whether the initial retainers and later replacements are included in the quoted fee.

Is it better than veneers?

Short-term orthodontics moves your natural teeth into a better position, whereas veneers change how they look by bonding a facing to the front surface, which usually means removing some enamel permanently. For crowding, spacing or rotations, moving the teeth is the more conservative route because nothing healthy is cut away. Veneers can address colour, shape and worn edges in ways tooth movement cannot. Some UK patients combine both, straightening first and then reshaping only the few teeth that still need it. Neither is universally better.

What should I ask before starting?

Ask the clinician to state in writing exactly what will be corrected, what will deliberately be left uncorrected, and what happens if six months is not long enough. Also ask who is providing the treatment and whether they are a GDC-registered specialist orthodontist or a general dentist, whether records such as photographs and radiographs will be taken first, whether retainers and refinements are included, and what the total cost is including review appointments. A limited plan can be reasonable, but only when the compromise is documented.
