## Why Do You Need a Retainer After Braces?

After braces or aligners are removed, your teeth are in their corrected positions — but the surrounding bone and fibres that hold them in place have not yet fully stabilised. Without a retainer, teeth will gradually shift back towards where they came from.

This movement can begin within days of removing your brace and continues slowly for years. Retainers hold teeth in position while the bone consolidates — then, long-term wear prevents the natural relapse that occurs in everyone's teeth over time.

Initial Wear (full time)

3–6 months

Long-term Wear

Nights only — indefinitely

Typical Cost (per arch)

£80 – £350

## Which Retainer Will You Be Given?

Most retainers are fitted on the day your braces come off, or when you finish your last aligner. You will usually get a fixed wire, a removable retainer, or both. Your orthodontist chooses based on how much your teeth moved and how likely they are to relapse. For a full side-by-side of pros, cons and costs, see [fixed vs removable retainers compared](https://virtualconsultant.online/guides/fixed-vs-removable-retainers).

### Fixed (Bonded) Retainer

A thin wire bonded to the back of the front teeth — usually the lower front six. It is permanent (until removed by a dentist) and works continuously without any patient effort.

No compliance required

Invisible — bonded behind the teeth

Requires careful flossing around the wire

Can break — needs periodic dentist checks

Typical cost: £150 – £350 per arch

### Removable Retainer

A clear or Hawley-style retainer worn at night. Taken out during the day for eating, brushing, and social situations. Easy to clean and simple to replace if lost or damaged.

Easy to clean and maintain

No visible hardware when not worn

Requires consistent nightly wear to be effective

Can be lost or damaged — replacement costs apply

Typical cost: £80 – £250 per arch

## How Long Do You Need to Wear a Retainer?

The straightforward answer: indefinitely, but with reducing commitment over time.

### First 3–6 months

Full-time wear (day and night, removing only to eat). This is the most critical window while bone consolidates.

#### 6 months – 2 years

Night-only wear. Most people transition to nights only after the initial full-time period.

##### Beyond 2 years

Ongoing night wear to prevent long-term relapse. Teeth naturally shift throughout life — retainers prevent this.

## What to Expect in the First Few Weeks

A new removable retainer usually feels tight for the first few days, and you may notice a slight lisp or extra saliva until your tongue gets used to it. This normally settles within a week. A fixed wire can feel odd to your tongue at first, but most people stop noticing it quickly.

Clean a removable retainer every day with a soft toothbrush and cool water, and keep it in its case when it is not in your mouth. Hot water can warp clear retainers. Around a fixed wire, use a floss threader or small interdental brush daily, because plaque builds up easily behind the lower front teeth.

Expect a retainer check a few weeks to a few months after your braces come off. If a removable retainer starts to feel very tight after a missed night, or a fixed wire feels loose, contact your orthodontist or dentist rather than waiting for your next routine visit.

## What Happens If You Stop Wearing Your Retainer?

Teeth will gradually drift back. This is not a myth — it is a well-documented biological process called relapse.

The speed and extent of relapse varies between individuals. Some people see noticeable movement within weeks of stopping; for others it takes months or years. Factors that increase relapse risk include: significant crowding before treatment, teeth that were heavily rotated, a history of relapse after previous treatment, and age (relapse risk increases over time).

If you have stopped wearing your retainer and noticed movement, your orthodontist may be able to reassess and provide new retainers — in some cases, minor re-treatment may be recommended.

## Are Retainers Included in Orthodontic Treatment Cost?

Sometimes — but not always. It depends on the practice and the package agreed at the start of treatment. Some practices include one set of removable retainers as standard; others charge separately. Fixed retainers are less commonly included.

Replacement retainers (if your original is lost, broken, or no longer fits) are almost always charged separately. It is always worth asking your orthodontist upfront: what retainers are included, how many, and what replacements cost.

### FAQs: Retainers After Braces

Do I have to wear a retainer forever?

Effectively yes, if you want to maintain your results long-term. After the initial full-time period (3–6 months), most people move to night-only wear — which is minimal effort but essential. Teeth naturally drift throughout life; retainers prevent this drift from undoing your treatment.

Is it normal for a new retainer to feel tight?

Yes. A new removable retainer usually feels snug for the first few days because it is holding your teeth firmly in their new positions. Some people also have a slight lisp or extra saliva at first, which normally settles within a week as the tongue adapts. If the retainer still feels painful after a week, rubs your gums, or will not seat fully over your teeth, contact your orthodontist so the fit can be checked.

How much does a replacement retainer cost in the UK?

Replacement removable retainers typically cost £80 to £250 per arch depending on the type and the practice. Essix (clear) retainers are usually at the lower end; Hawley-style retainers vary more widely. Rebonding or repairing a fixed wire typically costs £50 to £150, while full replacement of a broken wire costs £150 to £350.

Can I get a retainer from any dentist, or does it have to be my orthodontist?

Any GDC-registered dentist can provide replacement retainers, not just the orthodontist who treated you. You will need an impression or digital scan of your current teeth to make new ones. If your teeth have moved, a new retainer will hold them in their current (moved) position — it will not move them back to the treated position.

Do I need a retainer after Invisalign?

Yes. Retention after Invisalign is just as important as after fixed braces. The principle is the same: teeth are in new positions and will move back without retention. Vivera retainers (made by Invisalign) are one option, but standard clear retainers work equally well and are often less expensive.

What happens if my fixed retainer breaks?

A broken fixed retainer should be repaired promptly. If part of the wire detaches from one or more teeth, those teeth are no longer held and can begin moving immediately. Contact your dentist or orthodontist as soon as you notice a problem — do not wait until your next routine appointment.

When is my retainer fitted after braces?

Usually at the same appointment your braces or aligners are removed, or within a few days. A fixed retainer is bonded straight away, while a removable retainer is made from a scan or impression taken at removal and may be fitted the same day or shortly after. Teeth are least stable in the first weeks after treatment, so it is important not to leave a gap between removal and starting retention.

Can I eat with my retainer in?

Removable retainers should come out for eating and for drinking anything other than plain water, then go back in after brushing, so sugars and acids are not trapped against the teeth. Fixed bonded retainers stay in permanently and most foods are fine, but very hard or sticky foods such as crusty bread ends, hard sweets and toffee can debond or bend the wire, so cut food into smaller pieces.
