# Retainer Breakage UK

A broken retainer matters because teeth can move quickly after orthodontic treatment, especially if retention has been interrupted.

## Broken fixed retainer

If a bonded wire lifts, snaps, or catches the tongue, contact your orthodontic provider. Do not pull it off. Wear your removable retainer if it fits and you have been told to use one.

## Cracked removable retainer

A small crack may still hold teeth temporarily, but it can worsen. Stop using it if it is sharp, distorted, or no longer fits correctly.

## If the retainer feels tight

Tightness can mean teeth have moved. Do not force a retainer that causes strong pain or does not seat fully. Ask for advice promptly.

## Replacement planning

Ask about scan records, replacement fees, turnaround time, and whether a new retainer or minor realignment is needed.

### Frequently Asked Questions

Is a broken retainer urgent?

A broken retainer should be treated as urgent, because teeth can begin drifting within days once retention stops, and the risk is highest in the first year or two after a brace or aligners come off. Contact your orthodontic practice as soon as you notice a snapped bonded wire, a cracked plate or a retainer that no longer seats properly. If you have a spare or an older removable retainer that still fits without force, wear it until you are seen. Do not stop wearing anything and wait for a routine appointment.

Can I glue a retainer myself?

Never try to glue or repair a retainer at home. Household adhesives, superglue and craft glues are not safe for use in the mouth, and they distort the fit so the retainer no longer holds the teeth where it should, which can actively move them in the wrong direction. Heating or bending a plastic retainer has the same effect. Keep any fragments in a container and take them to your orthodontic practice, since they help the clinician judge how the retainer failed and whether a different design would last longer.

Will I need braces again?

Repeat orthodontic treatment is usually avoidable after a retainer breaks, provided the problem is dealt with quickly. If the teeth have not moved noticeably, a replacement made from a fresh impression or scan will hold the existing result. Where small amounts of movement have already happened, a short course of limited realignment, sometimes using aligners, may be needed before a new retainer will fit. The longer the gap without any retention, the more likely a full course of treatment becomes, which is why contacting the practice within days rather than months matters.

What should I do if my fixed retainer has come loose at one tooth?

Contact the practice and get it looked at, even though it will not feel like an emergency. A bonded retainer that has detached at one tooth still looks intact, but that tooth is now free to move while the wire holds its neighbours, which is how relapse creeps in unnoticed over months. There is also a smaller risk that a partly detached wire exerts an unintended force on the tooth. In the meantime, keep the area scrupulously clean, since a loose section traps plaque, and avoid picking at it with your tongue or fingernail, which tends to detach more of it.

Can I wear my old retainer if the new one has broken?

If you still have a previous retainer and it seats without force, wearing it is better than wearing nothing at all while you wait for an appointment. What matters is how it feels going in. Slight tightness suggests the teeth have drifted a little and the retainer is doing its job. Anything that needs real pressure, does not sit down fully, or makes a tooth ache should be taken out, because forcing an ill-fitting appliance can move teeth in unintended directions. Take both the old and the broken retainer with you to the appointment so they can be compared.

How quickly do teeth move if a retainer is not worn?

Faster than most people expect. Movement can begin within days of stopping, it is usually measurable within a few weeks, and the greatest instability is in the first year or so after the braces come off, while the fibres around the teeth are still reorganising. The lower front teeth are typically the first to show it. This is why a broken retainer is worth acting on in days rather than putting off until a routine check-up, and why retention is now generally described as indefinite rather than as something with an end date.
