# Life With Braces

Braces require some adjustments to daily habits — particularly around eating, cleaning, and managing occasional discomfort. This guide covers what to expect and how to get the best results from your treatment.

## What Does Life With Braces Involve?

Braces work best when daily habits support the treatment plan. Food choices, cleaning routines, repair advice, and retainer planning all affect how smoothly treatment runs.

Use this guide alongside your clinician's instructions, especially if a bracket loosens, a wire rubs, or cleaning becomes difficult.

## What You Can and Can't Eat With Braces

Certain foods can damage brackets or wires or make them harder to keep clean. Adjusting what you eat during treatment helps keep everything on track and avoids unnecessary repair appointments.

Foods to Eat

Soft bread and pasta

Cooked vegetables

Soft fruit (banana, melon, berries)

Dairy — yoghurt, cheese, soft dairy

Eggs, fish, soft meat cut into small pieces

Soup, mashed potato, porridge

Soft rice and grains

Foods to Avoid

Hard foods — nuts, hard sweets, ice

Chewy foods — chewing gum, toffee, caramel

Crunchy snacks — crisps, popcorn, hard biscuits

Foods bitten into directly — apples, corn on the cob, crusty bread

Fizzy drinks and sugary foods (increase decay risk)

Hard crusts and bagels

## How to Clean Your Teeth With Braces

Good oral hygiene is especially important during orthodontic treatment. Brackets and wires create more surfaces for plaque and food to accumulate, so cleaning needs to be more thorough than usual.

### Brush After Every Meal

Brush your teeth and braces after every meal — ideally within 30 minutes of eating. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Angle the brush at 45 degrees to the gumline and clean above and below the wire separately.

---

#### Use Interdental Brushes

Interdental brushes (also called TePe brushes or proxy brushes) are small bottle-brush shaped tools that fit between brackets and under the wire. They are more effective than standard floss for cleaning around brackets.

---

##### Floss Daily

Threading floss under the wire is time-consuming but important for gum health. Floss threaders or orthodontic floss can make this easier. Water flossers are also an effective alternative.

---

###### Use a Fluoride Mouthwash

A daily fluoride mouthwash helps to protect enamel around the brackets and reduce the risk of white spot lesions — permanent marks on the teeth that can occur if plaque accumulates around the bracket base.

## How Do You Manage Discomfort and Brace Problems?

**Soreness and Pain.** Discomfort after fitting or adjustment is normal and usually settles within 1–3 days. [Read the soreness and pain guide](https://virtualconsultant.online/guides/do-braces-hurt).

**Broken Bracket.** A bracket that has come off the tooth needs attention. It won't fall out but should be reported to your orthodontist. [Read the broken bracket guide](https://virtualconsultant.online/support/broken-brace).

**Wire Sticking Out.** A wire that pokes the cheek or gum can be managed with orthodontic wax as a short-term measure. [Read the wire sticking out guide](https://virtualconsultant.online/support/wire-sticking-out).

**Loose Bracket.** A loose bracket is usually caused by eating hard or sticky food. It may move along the wire but remains attached. [Read the loose bracket guide](https://virtualconsultant.online/support/loose-bracket).

### Frequently Asked Questions

Can I eat normally with braces?

Most foods are fine, but you will need to avoid hard, crunchy, or chewy foods that can damage the brackets or wires. Hard foods should be cut into small pieces rather than bitten into directly. The adjustments become second nature after the first few weeks.

How often should I brush my teeth with braces?

Brush after every meal while you are wearing fixed braces — in practice at least three times a day, plus last thing at night. Twice daily is the absolute minimum, but brackets and wires create dozens of extra surfaces and sheltered corners where food and plaque collect, and plaque left sitting around a bracket for weeks is what causes the permanent white marks some patients are left with after debond. Use a soft brush angled at 45 degrees, cleaning above and below the wire on every tooth, and add interdental brushes between the brackets. A daily fluoride mouthwash at a different time from brushing gives extra protection.

Can I play sports with braces?

You can keep playing sport with braces, including at club and competitive level. For any contact or ball sport — rugby, football, hockey, boxing, martial arts, basketball — wear a mouthguard, and tell whoever fits it that you are in fixed braces. Standard boil-and-bite guards are moulded to the shape of your teeth on the day, so they stop fitting as the teeth move and can press on the brackets. Orthodontic mouthguards are made from softer material with extra depth to sit over the brackets and accommodate movement. Your orthodontist or dentist can supply one. If you take a knock to the mouth, get the brace checked.

Can I play a musical instrument with braces?

Wind and brass players can carry on with braces, though the first few weeks feel different because the brackets change the shape and feel of the embouchure. Higher registers and sustained passages are usually the first things to suffer, and lip soreness against the mouthpiece is common early on and after each adjustment. Most players adapt within a few weeks, and lip shields or a small piece of orthodontic wax over the front brackets makes the settling-in period far easier. Strings, percussion and keyboard are unaffected. If you have exams, auditions or performances booked, tell your orthodontist before fitting so the timing can be planned around them.

What should I do if a bracket falls off?

Contact your orthodontist to arrange a repair appointment. If the bracket is still attached to the wire, leave it in place and cover with wax if it is causing irritation. Eating carefully can help prevent further damage while you wait for the repair.

Do I need to change how I brush my teeth with braces?

Yes. With braces you should brush after every meal using a soft-bristled brush at a 45-degree angle, targeting above and below the wire. Add interdental brushes to clean between brackets, and use a fluoride mouthwash daily to protect enamel around the brackets.
