# Clear Aligner Chewies: What They Are and How to Use Them Correctly

Chewies — small foam or silicone seating cylinders — ensure your aligner is fully pressed against every tooth surface so it can deliver the planned forces. They are cheap, simple and one of the most effective ways to prevent tracking failure. Most patients under-use them; this guide tells you exactly when, how and how often to use them for the best results.

## What chewies are and what they're made of

Aligner chewies — also called seating cylinders or aligner fit sticks — are small cylindrical tubes typically 3 to 4cm long and around 1cm in diameter. They are made from soft polymeric materials such as styrene-ethylene butylene-styrene (SEBS) foam or medical-grade silicone, both of which are safe for oral use, latex-free, and resilient enough to be used multiple times. They do not contain medication or have any chemical action — their function is entirely mechanical. The biting pressure applied through the chewy forces the aligner tray firmly against the tooth surface, ensuring full seating.

## Why proper aligner seating matters

A clear aligner works by applying precisely programmed forces to specific teeth. These forces are designed into the geometry of the tray itself — when the tray is fully seated, it presses on certain surfaces and creates tooth movement. When the tray is not fully seated — even by a fraction of a millimetre — the contact points change, the forces are not delivered correctly, and the planned movement does not occur. Repeated or persistent poor seating is one of the primary causes of tracking failure: a situation where your teeth no longer match the aligner and subsequent trays in the sequence no longer fit correctly.

## How to use chewies correctly

Place the chewy between your upper and lower teeth in the posterior (back) region of your mouth and bite down firmly, then release and reposition along the arch. Work your way from the back teeth on one side to the back teeth on the other, spending approximately 5 to 10 minutes per session. Apply equal effort to both sides. You should feel the aligner click or settle more snugly against your teeth as you chew. Posterior teeth are the priority because this is where aligners most commonly unseat — the molar region is harder to pressure-fit without mechanical assistance. After completing the posterior sections, you can chew briefly on the front region too.

## When to use them — especially on day one of a new tray

The most critical time to use chewies is when you first insert a new aligner tray. A fresh tray is programmed for a tooth position slightly ahead of where your teeth currently sit — there is intentional tension in the fit. This tension means the tray will not seat fully simply by pressing it in with your fingers. Bite on the chewy for 5 to 10 minutes immediately after inserting a new tray, and then again each time you reinsert the tray after eating or cleaning. For the first 24 to 48 hours of a new tray, more frequent use — three to four sessions daily — is appropriate. After this initial period, once or twice daily is sufficient.

## Aligner attachment seating

If your treatment includes tooth-coloured resin attachments, chewies become even more important. Attachments create specific engagement points where the aligner grips the tooth for targeted movements. For the aligner to engage an attachment correctly, it must be fully seated over that attachment — a partial seat means partial or zero engagement. Using a chewy after each reinsertion helps ensure the aligner clicks fully onto each attachment. Some clinicians recommend applying chewy pressure directly over each attachment site specifically, in addition to the general posterior chewing technique.

## Signs your aligner is not seated properly

The clearest sign of poor seating is a visible gap between the aligner margin and your gumline, or between the biting surface of the aligner and the tooth. You may notice the aligner feels looser than the previous tray — this is normal on day one but should resolve within a few days if you are using chewies. If the aligner still does not seat properly after a week, or if you can push the tray in noticeably further with your fingers but it does not stay seated, contact your orthodontist. Do not move to the next tray until the current one fits well.

## How chewies prevent tracking failure

Tracking failure develops cumulatively. Each tray in your sequence is predicated on the previous one having achieved its planned movement. If trays are consistently poorly seated, tooth movement lags behind the plan at each step. By tray 10 or 15, the cumulative deficit may mean the tray no longer fits at all — requiring a mid-course correction, a rescan, and refinement aligners that add cost and time. Regular chewy use prevents this by ensuring each tray achieves its planned movement before you progress. It is one of the cheapest, most reliable insurance policies against needing refinements.

## Types of chewies and what to look for

Most orthodontists supply chewies at the start of treatment, and replacement packs are inexpensive — typically under £5 for a pack of 10. SEBS foam chewies (the original Invisalign munchies style) are soft and comfortable. Silicone chewies are firmer and more durable. Some come in different hardnesses — softer versions for initial days of a new tray, firmer for later in the wear cycle when the tray has partially seated. Flavoured versions are available but have no functional advantage. Avoid hard plastic bite sticks that can crack the aligner. Replace chewies regularly — they degrade with repeated use and lose their springiness after 2 to 3 weeks of daily use.

### Frequently Asked Questions

How long should I chew on chewies each day?

Aim for 5 to 10 minutes per session, working systematically along the posterior arch on both sides. On the first day of a new tray, three to four sessions is ideal. Once the tray is settling well — usually from day 2 or 3 — one or two sessions daily is sufficient.

Can I use chewies too much?

Excessive chewy use is unlikely to cause harm, but it is unnecessary once the tray is properly seated. If you find yourself needing to chew constantly to keep the aligner in place after several days, the tray may not be fitting correctly — contact your orthodontist rather than relying on continuous chewy use.

Do I need chewies with Invisalign specifically?

Yes. Invisalign's own product (munchies or aligner seating cylinders) serves the same function. All aligner brands benefit from chewies — Invisalign, Spark, ClearCorrect, and others. The tray geometry varies between brands but the seating principle is the same, so a generic chewy from any supplier works just as well as a branded one; there is no need to match the chewy brand to your aligner brand.

Can I use a folded cloth or finger pressure instead of a chewy?

Finger pressure alone is insufficient to fully seat aligners, particularly in the posterior region where visual access is limited. A folded cloth provides some biting resistance but wears quickly and does not distribute pressure evenly. Chewies are specifically designed for this purpose and are inexpensive — they are worth using properly.

My aligner feels tight — should I still use chewies?

Yes. A tight fit on a new tray indicates the tray is working as intended. Chewies help you seat it fully despite the tightness. Soreness in the first 24 to 48 hours of a new tray is normal and resolves as the tray settles.

How long do chewies last before I need to replace them?

Chewies typically last two to three weeks of regular daily use before they lose their springiness and become too compressed to exert useful pressure. Replacement packs are inexpensive — usually under £5 for ten chewies. Your orthodontist may supply them free as part of your treatment, but it is worth having spare packs at home. Discard chewies that have become permanently flattened, discoloured, or that smell unpleasant.
